Clean continuous power
Riverbend Hydro represents Quantrex's most significant infrastructure project in Latin America. Located on one of Brazil's major river systems the facility delivers reliable dispatchable clean power to a grid increasingly dependent on the firm baseload that hydropower uniquely provides.
Developed in close partnership with Brazilian federal and state authorities Riverbend Hydro meets the highest international environmental and social standards for large scale hydroelectric development delivering clean power for decades while protecting the river ecosystem that makes it possible.

Harnessing Brazil's river systems
Brazil has one of the richest hydroelectric resources in the world. Its river systems carry an enormous volume of water year round fed by the rainfall patterns of the Amazon basin and the Brazilian highlands. Riverbend Hydro is located at a point where the river narrows between two rock formations creating a natural head of water that makes hydroelectric generation both technically straightforward and highly productive.
The facility operates as a run of river plant with a modest reservoir that smooths daily flow variations without significantly altering the river's natural hydrology downstream.
Key characteristics:
Natural rock canyon site requiring minimal civil works
Run of river operation with limited impoundment
High annual average flow rate
Direct connection to the Brazilian national grid interconnection
Hydropower at industrial scale
Riverbend Hydro uses eight Francis turbine units each rated at 80 MW and optimized for the specific head and flow characteristics of the site. Francis turbines are the most efficient hydroelectric machines ever built capable of converting more than 95% of the kinetic energy of flowing water into electrical output.
The facility can move from zero to full output in under four minutes making it an invaluable source of rapid response clean power for the Brazilian grid.
Core systems:
Eight 80 MW Francis turbine generating units
Automated load following control system
Black start capability for grid restoration
Underwater turbine inspection robotics
Built to protect the river
Large scale hydroelectric development requires exceptional environmental stewardship. Quantrex designed Riverbend Hydro to the highest international environmental standards working with ecologists hydrologists and indigenous community representatives throughout the development process.
The facility operates under a comprehensive environmental management plan that governs minimum ecological flow rates fish passage operation sediment management and water quality monitoring.
Environmental commitments:
Minimum ecological flow guaranteed at all times
Fish passage infrastructure for all migratory species
Sediment bypass channel maintaining downstream sediment balance
Continuous water quality monitoring at twelve downstream stations
From river to grid
Electricity generated at Riverbend Hydro is stepped up to 500 kV at the on site switchyard and transmitted via a dedicated 180 kilometre transmission line to the national grid interconnection point. The facility operates under a thirty year concession agreement with the Brazilian federal government and a twenty year power purchase agreement with the national grid operator.
Key components:
500 kV on site switchyard
180 km dedicated transmission line
Thirty year federal concession agreement
Real time telemetry to national grid control center
